The
Backyard Ultra
Coach
Hi, I'm Chris.

I coach runners to their first 50 to 100 mile Backyard Ultra finish.

No cookie-cutter templates. Coaching from someone who's stood exactly where you are, and knows what it takes to reach the goal that currently feels out of reach.

Wanting it and believing you can do it are two very different things.

You've watched Backyard Ultra runners rack up 50 miles, 100km or 100 miles or more, and thought, I'd love to be able to do that.

Then the doubt lands. The distance sits out past anything your body has done so far, and every plan you find online is a one size fits all approach. This format is anything but.

Maybe you've already had a go and come up short. Maybe the entry page is open and you still haven't pressed the button.

I can help.

I ran my first 5k in 2022. Since then I've progressed through the distances to 7 Backyard Ultra finishes, including four over 100km and two over 100 miles, and a Team Wales vest at the 4 Nations Trophy. Every step of that came from experience banked race by race, legs conditioned for the work, and a mindset built along the way.

That progression is the thing I coach. Building the strength, the strategy and the mental resilience so the distance becomes possible. We'll do the work, then on race day you run the lap in front of you, and the next one, and let the total look after itself.

Alongside all of it: what to eat and when, how to pace a lap so your legs don't blow up, how to set up camp so the few minutes between laps actually count, and what to do when your head starts making a case for stopping.

Everything I coach now has been tested on myself first, refined over years of racing this format. Nothing theoretical, nothing borrowed from marathon training and hoped for the best. Now I coach other runners through their own version of that journey.

A decade coaching. Four years learning it from the inside.

The Coach

Almost a decade as a one-to-one coach, working with well over 150 people across running, strength and conditioning, and fat loss. Every programme runs on the same signature approach: world-class coaching backed by cutting edge mindset and psychology frameworks, underpinned by a multitude of qualifications across fitness, nutrition and psychology:

Level 5 Nutritional Advisor Diploma Level 3 Personal Trainer Diploma Level 2 Fitness Instructor Diploma Applied Psychology, CBT & NLP Practitioner Certified Flow State Coach UESCA Ultramarathon Coach Certification (in progress) Professional Chef, 10 Years

The Athlete

I spent 20 years in strength training before I ever ran a step. In 2022 I gave up alcohol and decided to try my hand at running. A 35-minute 5k was all it took to find my love for the sport.

I've been exactly where you are, staring at a distance that feels impossible. Now I coach other runners through it, and there's no feeling quite like watching someone achieve a Backyard Ultra result they didn't think they had in them.

The Yard Method

Five pillars, one loop. A weakness in any one of them shows up in the lap you can't finish. Training gets you fit enough to start. Fuelling keeps that fitness alive deep into the race. Strategy covers the few minutes between laps, where races are quietly decided long before anyone drops. Mindset I'd put at roughly 60% of this sport, because it's what gets you out of the chair when everything in you wants to stay there. Accountability means having a coach invested in your result, which is what makes the work in the build up actually happen.

FAQs

I've never done a Backyard Ultra. Is this still for me?

Yes. I coach first timers, and I coach runners already in the format looking to go further. If you've got a 10k, half marathon or marathon under your belt and your eyes on 50 to 100 miles, you're in the right place.

I've already run 75 miles in a Backyard Ultra. Can you get me to 100?

I've closed that gap myself, so I know exactly where it opens up. That stretch is rarely a fitness problem. It's fuelling, pacing, and what your head does once it gets dark.

Why is it a three month minimum commitment?

Because this isn't a quick fix. Four weeks won't get you the result you're after. It takes time, it takes the hard work in training, and it takes building a relationship where I actually understand how your body responds to the training I set for you. Three months is the honest minimum for that. After the three months you move onto a rolling month to month subscription, and you stay for as long as you want to.

I'd rather commit to a full year in advance. Is that possible?

It is. If you've got a bigger, more ambitious goal in mind and you'd rather commit to twelve months and pay upfront, there's a discounted rate. Mention it on the call if that's something you're interested in.

What if I can't make the live weekly call?

It's recorded and goes straight into the resource hub, so you don't lose the session.

Do you coach longer distances too?

I only coach Backyard Ultras, and only up to distances I've run myself, currently 27 yards. Coaching authentically matters to me, so I won't claim to take you further than I've been.

Is the nutrition and mindset side generic, or specific to me?

The library is the same core knowledge for everyone in the group, all of it my own methodologies built from experience rather than recycled theory. Your feedback video and the group call are where it gets applied to your training and your week specifically.
